Darren Huang is a Canadian film composer based in Los Angeles.
A Memoire of Becoming.
Born in Toronto, Canada, raised in Beijing, China, and now based in Los Angeles, Darren often borrows from his multicultural identity to compose music for film and documentaries, lending a unique voice to each story yet to be told.
Darren began his training in music theory and classical piano at the age of 5 when his family moved to Beijing, China.
A decade later, he moved back to the US to pursue his studies and began composing.
A former intern at Hans Zimmer’s production company and mentee of Jeff Beal (House of Cards), Darren has received high praise from acclaimed TV and film composers including Harry Gregson-Williams, Mark Watters, and Brandon Campbell. His composition “Threnody for the Victims of COVID-19“ was featured as part of the virtual event held by UN Chamber Music Society on 30 June 2021. In Spring of 2022, he was selected to attend the prestigious ASCAP/Columbia Film Scoring Workshop, where he composed an original score for the short film Claudia (dir. Erin Ramirez), which later on entered NewFest 2022. In 2023, he was invited to produce a short documentary score for Wang Kar Wai’s studio, which resulted in a “one draft pass“ collaboration.
An author by night, Darren published an autobiographical novel titled The Impermanent Light in April 2021. In this coming-of-age story, he incorporates musical concepts and mindfulness ideologies while reflecting on his own experience of living in a foreign country.
